LAMBE - LAMBE miniature theatre: Tiniest Stage for Greatest Fools

This workshop is open to everyone, regardless of prior puppetry experience. Together, we’ll explore various concepts of portable, travelling puppet theatre, and each participant will build a fully functioning Lambe-Lambe—a miniature box theatre designed for one viewer at a time.

The goal of the workshop is to create a tiny, intimate show in a box. Participants will design and construct their own stage, puppets, lighting, and storytelling universe. We’ll cover techniques such as:

  • Building articulated paper puppets, puppets from found objects, or fabric-and-wire figures using thermoplast (Worbla)
  • Creating miniature stage elements and mechanisms (curtains, shadow screens, etc.)
  • Assembling a simple light circuit with LED lights and switches
  • (Optionally) Adding recorded sound with an MP3 player or phone

If you wish to include audio, please bring two sets of headphones (one for yourself, one for the viewer) and an MP3 player or smartphone.

All essential materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring personal or supportive materials relevant to their individual project.

By the end of the festival, each participant will have created their own Lambe-Lambe box theatre, complete with lights, puppets, staging, and a short story ready to perform at the festival.

Lambe-Lambe theater is an intimate style of puppetry that originated in Brazil in the late 1980s. Also known as caja mágica (magic box) or caja misteriosa (mystery box), this form of micro-theatre delivers short performances (1–3 minutes) to a single spectator peeking through a peephole, often accompanied by sound through headphones.

Combining visual storytelling with immersive soundscapes, Lambe-Lambe performances offer powerful and personal narratives in a compact, mobile format. Its charm lies in its portability, poetic scale, and endless creative potential.
